The NIH offers a continuum of funding to support researchers throughout
their research careers and at all different levels of education and
research experience.
The figure below illustrates all of the different types of research
or training funding available through the NIH. To determine the types
of funding you may be eligible for, locate your current level of
education and research experience on the left side of the figure. On
the right, you will find the corresponding research awards appropriate
for individuals with your level of experience. It is important that new researchers begin with small or more easily attainable projects, as there is a progression in difficulty, length, and complexity of the proposals. Follow the link for full descriptions of funding types.
Certain awards are designed for faculty working in institutions with a
small research program or none at all. These awards provide funding
for the development of the institution's research program and
