Grant Writing

How to Use the Grant Writing Tutorial

There are five modules of the Grant Writing Tutorial including, Formulating a Question, Your Proposal Team, Writing the Proposal, After Your Grant is Submitted, and Fatal Flaws and Common Pitfalls. These modules are designed to lead you, step-by-step, through the full sequential process of writing a grant. Also within the tutorial is a unique outline feature that allows you to build an online proposal outline. Read below to learn more about it!

Why Should I Use the Outline Feature?

This outline can provide an extremely helpful tool for both writing your proposal, and as a document to begin concrete discussions about your project with a prospective mentor. The outline will show a prospective mentor that you are serious about advancing the science of substance abuse and that you are able to communicate your goals for following through on a research project.

The Outline Feature of the Tutorial

How to Use the Outline Feature
The Outline is available for display and printing from each module of the tutorial. Follow the four steps below to build your customized outline:

  1. Start the tutorial by clicking on the Next button at the bottom of this page. This will take you to the first module, Formulating a Question. Proceed through the modules of the tutorial by selecting the Next button at the bottom of the page.

  2. When you come to a textbox, simply fill in the requested information and then hit the submit button. The information you submit will be placed into your outline. To build a complete outline, we recommend that you fill in each textbox in sequence for all five modules.

  3. If you want to move around from one module to another to change your answers or reread a section, just select the appropriate module in the navigation bar above.

  4. When you are ready, click on the Display Your Outline link on the top right of each page throughout the tutorial. Print your outline by selecting Print Proposal Outline at the end of the outline or by selecting the print function on your browser's toolbar.
