Biosketches and Personnel

  • Brief career summaries, or biosketches, are required for all key personnel proposed on your project. (Key personnel are defined as those who contribute to the scientific development or execution of the project, whether or not salary funds are requested.)

  • Biosketches should emphasize the following points: (1) research skills and experiences, (2) management or supervision experience (especially regarding key roles played on major projects or studies), and (3) publications or paper presentations.

  • Typically, a biosketch can be no more than four pages per person. (A biosketch can be three pages per person, and must include a slightly different format if the grant is submitted as a modular grant. See the note below for more details.) It is often difficult to condense an entire career onto two pages, but it can be done! Here are some tips on how to write biosketches:

    • Focus on the individual's experiences relevant to the work he or she will do on your project.

    • It is not necessary to include every publication bearing the individual's name. A list of relevant, selected publications will suffice. In some cases, including relevant paper presentations can be useful, too.

  • Click here for a sample biosketch of a Principal Investigator. If we could condense his career summary onto fewer than four pages, you certainly can do the same for yours.

Note: R01, R03, R21, and Phase I SBIR or STTR grants must be submitted as Modular Grants if direct costs are under $25,000. Certain application regulations, such as biosketch format and budget reporting, are different from the ones described here. Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the Modular Grant Website for specific instructions on writing biosketches and budgets for these types of grants.
